Road Transportation still remains the major means of transport in Ghana. However, road transportation in Ghana is saddled with many safety challenges making our roads unsafe and susceptible to preventable road traffic fatalities and injuries.
Data compiled by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has revealed that, the total number of commuters killed in road traffic accidents in 2018 recorded a 12.76% jump over the figure for 2017. More men than women perish in road crashes with some being pronounced dead on arrival at health facilities.
Our Ghana — Telematic Road Safety Program (G-TRSP) offers continuous and real-time aerial traffic monitoring using tethered drones linked to telematic devices mounted on vehicles allowing for persistent data collection and analysis.
The tethered drone is a compact tool which is easy to transport and deploy.
The system provides various valuable traffic data (trajectories, behaviors, vehicle speeds, passenger manifests etc.), which are crucial information for transport operators and public authorities to effectively manage road safety.
Our road safety policy provides a broad framework for dealing with the various risks posed to the safety of passengers and property on our roads.
TThe National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) which has the responsibility for road safety policy will therefore need to have an opportunity to use the G-TRSP as an effective means of ensuring road safety in Ghana.
A robust and rigorous road safety policy is an absolute must-have for reducing road accidents. The TRSP does not only ensure passenger and property safety but also safeguards against potential insurance claims in the event of an accident.
